Slut Walk – Interpretations

The slut walk was prompted by a Canadian police officer whose advice to women is to avoid rape by not dressing like a slut.
Radio 4 Woman’s Hour asks the question: If you dress provocatively are you ‘asking for it’?
How we choose to dress, to behave, to communicate, is guided by societal rules; is it right or wrong is a matter of personal opinion, values, upbringing, and experience.
Fortunately, we don’t always act on impulse, otherwise, market sellers wouldn’t be able to leave their wares out on show, traffic lights and other road rules would be totally redundant, there might be increased violence, more litter in the street, more physical contact than is expected amongst strangers, and lots more impulsive behaviours!
Clearly there is no end to what we would or could do if we had no control over our emotions and behaviour. And yes, there are some people who do not control themselves, hence crime, rape, violence and other law-breaking activities do happen all the time.
How we interpret how a woman chooses to dress is entirely individual; fortunately, our society sets some fundamental ground rules and guidance when it comes to what is acceptable and what isn’t, in general.

This is a great post Natalie.
It seems like this debate is ongoing with so many personal judgements and opinions to throw into the mix.
I imagine this topic is debated in all countries and cultures around the globe too.
I wonder how far back in history we have battled this issue out? Perhaps even neanderthal man debated what an appropriate length of animal skin skirt was?
At least with blog posts like this we now have a better understanding of the balance needed within our cultures and societies. Thanks Natalie.
