Looking For an Employee
Miss N had run a small business for several years and had always worked alone.
With business growth and increasing demands on her time, she realised it would be sensible to take on an assistant to run the office and administration, to enable her to invest her time doing what she did best.
Miss N was particularly concerned about recruiting someone; she feared discovering at a later stage that they were incompatible. Taking on an employee was going to be a very big decision for her, costing her a lot of time, expense and worry, hence it was essential that she took all the steps she possibly could to get it right first time.
Firstly, Miss N was profiled. The profile indicated that she was a bubbly and talkative character who was also a perfectionist with an eye for detail; she worked quickly but methodically and neatly, and that she was both people and task oriented.
Secondly, her shortlist of two potential employees were also profiled.
It is essential to note that both candidates had been interviewed by Miss N prior to the profiling process taking place, and the profiling was done in conjunction with this process.
A psychometric profile should never be used as a stand-alone tool when determining whether to hire or fire; its main purpose is to provide additional information about people alongside what they already know about themselves.
In this case, the pyschometric profile reports outlined the personality of both candidates.
What was clear was that one of them was slower and somewhat more chaotic in their approach than the other, a point which Miss N had noticed in the interview. Due to Miss N’s own profile report it was clear that anyone slow, disorganised and untidy, or anyone too driven or aggressive, would eventually drive her crazy She went with the second candidate and to my knowledge, they are still working happily together to this day!
The moral of the story: there are no guarantees you will always get every decision right, but it helps to have a second opinion and as much information as possible!
