Is your CV giving away too much too soon?
Typically, clients use life coaching for career changes, and this week my client wanted to use a session to review his CV.
Although the first thing I’m usually asked is my opinion on the existing CV, it’s much more effective for the client to decide what their own opinion is of their CV and how they can make it better, punchier, and more interesting. It’s important to remember that a CV is there to give an opening, to raise curiosity, and to prepare the way for a face-to-face interview – it’s not there to have the interview for you. My client and I discussed how often it’s better to avoid telling your whole life story, or giving away too much information on paper.
We ended the session with a little laugh at the old theatrical adage that “less is more”. The CV is a curtain-raiser, not the main show. Give enough to make them want to see you, to meet you, to interview you. As they say backstage, “always leave them wanting more”.
All the best,
