Life Coaching Looks At Feeling Anxious About Presentations…

Life coaching covers a wide range of areas including feelings of anxiety and the one that particularly stands out for people is feeling anxious about presentations.
It is well known that one of the greatest fears of most people in the world is public speaking so rest assured, if you feel this way, this is very normal.
Some simple presentation tips:
Before you do the presentation make sure you are really really comfortable with the material, make sure you know your subject really well.
See if you can find something (or many things) you enjoy about the subject; the reason for this is that if you enjoy talking about it, you are more likely to relax, to smile, to possibly even enjoy sharing it with your audience….
Practise doing the presentation as many times as you can before the day of the presentation; stand in front of a mirror when you do practice; this is also quite challenging, and yet it will help you reduce the intensity of the nervous / anxiety feelings you’ve been experiencing.
Now, think about how you define / identify yourself; you say you’re a shy, anxious / nervous person… is that always true or do you experience these feelings under certain circumstances?
Go along with me on this one… is it possible that you’re quite a happy, relaxed person some or most of the time, and there are events or circumstances that cause you to feel emotional or uncertain and hence you use the terms anxious / nervous?
If so, see if you can say to yourself: I’m anxious about xyz (xyz being the event you are anxious about), whereas, I’m generally quite an easy-going, relaxed person (or whatever adjectives you prefer to use here).
Finally, create a mini-movie in your mind; in this mini-movie you are walking confidently into the room, walking head held high to the front of the room, preparing to present, looking up at the audience, smiling at them, introducing your topic, and starting the presentation with one of those things you would really like to share with the audience, you pause, you smile, you ask them a question or two to make sure they’re “engaged” (i.e. listening, paying attention, focused on you and not on their “shopping list”).
Create a mini-movie and make sure you feel really FAB, really GREAT in this movie, and replay it as again and again and again until you really feel more comfortable and less scared about the giving the presentation.
Remember, it’s OK to feel a bit nervous, most people do, even actors with years of experience!!
Let me know if this helps at all, I would really love to hear your feedback. And if you want to take it further and do something about your own feelings when it comes to presenting, talk to a life coach, this is what we do.
I believe if you really want to make it work, you CAN DO IT!!!
All the best,
