3 Tips on How to Be a Great Boss
Many of my life coaching and business coaching clients are either a boss, leader or line manager and have a team of people that they manage.
Often, they say to me: “No one ever taught me how to manage, I’m good at what I do, so I’ve moved up the ranks and now I feel a bit lost; I’m not sure how to bring out the best in my team.”
In this blog, I would like to share with you just a taste of some of the actions and behaviours you could consider doing differently, to enhance your experience of being a great boss, both for yourself and for your team.
Tip 1: make sure each team member is doing what they do best.
Every person has specific skills, knowledge and abilities; sometimes the wrong person is placed in the wrong role and this only leads to internal frustration and reduced productivity.
Recognise the strengths of those who work for you and you will gain by getting in return the best possible contribution that person can give.
Tip 2: listen, listen, listen.
The best way to build a relationship is to take time to listen.
And with your team, if you want to know what’s going on, what’s working and what isn’t, and have trust and openness so you can always deal with matters before they become issues, you need to be available and know how to listen.
Listening is really about focused attention, including eye contact, no distractions, no interruptions.
Your team will respect you more, and trust you more, if they know you listen to them.
Tip 3: feedback is positive, criticism is negative – be a positive boss.
When your team is doing what you want, let them know; and on those occasions when they are not doing quite what you want, let them know how they can do it differently and therefore, achieve a better outcome.
Feedback helps people work out how to change in a way that they can improve on what they are currently doing; criticism is demotivating, avoid at all costs!
Summary:
The value of being a great boss today and being remembered as a great boss tomorrow is that you can orchestrate high efficiency and effective results in the workplace; and, at the same time you and your team can enjoy the process.
That’s a win-win situation all round!
