How To Pay Attention – 3 Simple Tips


Is paying attention the same as listening?  When do we pay attention?

There is so much happening around us these days that our minds are constantly distracted.

There is so much that we need to focus on that it is very difficult for us to pay attention for any length of time to only one thing.

When you’re sitting face-to-face with your children, your partner, your boss, colleagues or team, at a meeting, do you really pay attention or do you find your mind wandering because there’s so much else for you to think about?

We are bombarded with so many things to think about, to do, to plan, prepare, organise… the list is endless; so how do we pay attention?  How do we focus and listen 100%?

You can start to pay attention by applying these 3 simple tips:

  • In a meeting or when with another person, look at that person, so that your focus is on them as they are speaking, you will then find you are able to pay attention to that person
  • Be curious about what they are saying, if you’re curious, you’ll be even more focused, you’ll want to know more
  • When reading emails or documents, do only that one thing, read it through from start to finish and then decide what you need to do with it: file it, deal with it, delete it

When you pay attention to whatever you are doing, fully and totally, you will have greater satisfaction from either the task, the action or the interaction.

Paying attention, it’s an art these days!!
